After an injury, more than one type of insurance can apply. Here is how each one usually works for our patients.
Every auto policy in Oregon includes PIP. It is usually the first coverage that pays for chiropractic care, physical therapy and massage therapy after a car accident, and it pays regardless of fault.
If another driver caused the accident, their bodily injury liability coverage may pay for care that goes beyond your PIP benefits. These claims usually take longer and are often handled with an attorney.
Oregon auto policies must include uninsured motorist coverage. It can help when the driver who hit you has no insurance or not enough insurance to cover your injuries.
If you were hurt on the job, your employer’s workers’ compensation insurance can cover your care. We treat back, neck, shoulder and repetitive strain injuries from work. Workplace injury recovery
If you have a personal injury attorney, treatment can be arranged under a letter of protection, so the bill is paid from your settlement.
We also work with health insurance. Benefits for chiropractic care depend on your plan, so call us and we will help you check what is covered.
Oregon law requires every private passenger auto insurance policy to include Personal Injury Protection (ORS 742.520). PIP is no-fault coverage: your own insurance pays your medical bills first, without waiting to find out who caused the accident.
PIP pays for reasonable and necessary medical care, including chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, rehabilitation and massage therapy, for expenses incurred within two years after the injury.
Each group has conditions and exclusions in the law, so coverage depends on the circumstances of the accident.
| PIP benefit | Oregon minimum (ORS 742.524) |
|---|---|
| Medical expenses, including chiropractic care | Up to $15,000 per person, for expenses incurred within 2 years of the injury |
| Lost income | 70% of lost income, up to $3,000 per month, for up to 52 weeks, if you are disabled for at least 14 days |
| Essential services (if you don’t work) | Up to $30 per day for up to 52 weeks, if you are disabled for at least 14 days |
| Child care | $25 per day, up to $750, if a parent of a minor child is hospitalized for 24 hours or more |
| Funeral expenses | Up to $5,000 |
These are the minimums required by law. Many policies include higher PIP limits. Read more in our guide Oregon PIP Insurance Explained.
